NightJet at Daylight

NightJet at Daylight

This is an addendum to the previous post about the Terminal of the Westbahn in Vienna, Austria. Sometimes when watching trains the avid rail-fan runs into unusual compositions like the one pictured. I do not know the exact background for this train but it might be a transfer run. Anyways, it looks like ÖBB unwrapped a starter train set and put it on the rails along platform 2 just in front of the iconic hall of Wien Westbahnhof. So what do we have here? Behind a rather common “Taurus” class heavy electric, a control cab coach usually used at the end of a train in commuter service as well as a refurbished  sleeping car make up the whole set. The for sleeping car got re-branded for the NightJet service which ÖBB introduced recently. Although passengers and onlookers had the impression that overnight trains are in decline in Europe, ÖBB picked up quite some routes and began to operate a “nocturnal” network of long distance connections in Central-Europe. ÖBB marketing as well as design departments did a great job coming up with the right ideas to promote the offer. I look forward taking an overnight trip to Berlin, Zurich or Rome on a NightJet train soon.
