Big show at Fostoria, OH

Fostoria, OH is one of those rare places on this planet where three double track lines cross each other. Well known for the railway history the small town in the middle of the Midwest is still a busy place when it comes to train traffic. In 2009 I came down here to watch trains for the very first time. Back then the abandoned Amtrak depot still had its platforms but the rail park has not been developed.

In the meantime the fabulous “Iron Triangle” rail park is one of the best locations to watch trains safely. It is well maintained, provides plenty of information about the area and is steadily frequented by rail buffs, families and tourists from all over the place.

Following the basic rule of train watching- get our early!- I arrived when to sun still was low after having spent the night in the freshly renovated Best Western hotel in town.

After heavy rain the previously this day turned our to be a bright and sunny one. The perfect weather for the action to come! As expected, there were numerous trains and many opportunities to take pictures of mostly CSX and  NS trains rumbling over the the diamonds that form the iron triangle.

The location provides good location along its fences to one can pick the next spot for taking a picture without disturbing other rail fans. Speakers transmit railroad radio communication so there is no need to bring your own scanner.

I had a good time out there in Fostoria enjoying the parade of trains as well as chatting with other rail fans around. So if you got the chance, make sure your next train watching trip takes you to Fostoria, OH.
