Historic Diesels in Berlin

Historic Diesels in Berlin

On to Berlin today. First order of business was a ride around the city on S-Bahn line 41. In doing so the German term for sight seeing (“Stadtrundfahrt”) gets a whole new and pretty accurate meaning. Traveling along the circle line I came across a member of the former DR class 130 family, better known to German rail fans as “Ludmillas”. Today the Russian built 6-axle Diesel is in DB Schenker Polska livree. The engine sat near Hermann Street. station when I took the shot form the passing S-Bahn train. Also note the classic semaphore signal to the left. There are still a lot of those around on older DB lines and I like them a lot!

histdieselsAlso on this trip and just minutes before, I got a glimpse of another “historic” Diesel engine still in operation today. Six axle NOHAB 1151 was parked east of “Neu Köln” station so I hopped out to take a telephoto shot from the platform. Not the greatest photo but hopefully good enough for the proof.

If the look seems somehow familiar to US folks, you’re right! In the 1950s, Swedish company NOHAB started manufacturing diesel locomotives under licence from EMD for the Danish and Hungarian railways. The look and feel of “covered wagons” is definitely there- only that the European versions have cabs on each end. NOHAB 1151 is owned by CLR- Cargo Logistic Rail and painted in original DSB colors.
