Walking The High Line
The „High Line Park“ can be regraded to be one of the best tourist attractions in Manhattan- and it’s a free one! The interested rail-fan is on one side happy that the trestle structure survived and got another life as an elevated park and on the other hand is sad to be „born too late“ in order to experience operation on the old „West Side spur“. Nevertheless it is quite a nice walk from the Penn Station area down to Gansevoort street.
This time I stayed close to Penn Station in Midtown roaming around mostly on foot with some leaps taken via subway. Talking about the subway- the New York Transit Museum is another nice gem. Located in an old subway station in Brooklyn the exhibition presents about twenty historic subway cars on the two station tracks as well as numerous mass transport system artifacts on the mezzanine level. I really liked the collection of turnstiles showing the development form the early 1900s till today.
